The MOL Group launches legal proceedings regarding the Hungarian carbon dioxide quota tax
MOL Plc. (“MOL”) hereby notifies the capital markets of the following:
In April 2026, MOL and its subsidiaries that are subject to carbon dioxide quota tax levied on carbon dioxide emission in Hungary being in force since 2023, filed a request to the National Tax and Customs Administration (hereinafter: Tax Authority) seeking a refund of the carbon dioxide quota tax, which the Tax Authority rejected.
According to the resolution of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Case C-519/24, rendered on 16 April 2026 found that the carbon dioxide quota tax is contrary to European Union directives.
MOL and its subsidiaries thar are subject to the carbon dioxide quota tax launched legal proceedings today with the competent Courts, requesting the Courts to overturn the Tax Authority’s rejective decisions and order the Tax Authority to conduct a new proceeding.
In the proceedings filed, the MOL Group has set the value of the dispute at a total of HUF 126.0 billion forints (approximately USD 395 million), which includes both the amount of tax claimed for a refund and the related late-payment interest.
